Globe launches SEA-US cable system

Connects Davao to US for enhanced PHL internet connectivity

Globe Telecom commercially launched today the $250-million Southeast Asia-United States (SEA-US) submarine cable system which provides direct links between Davao and the United States for richer and enhanced international connectivity for businesses in Mindanao and the rest of the country.

“First world connection is more than just fast internet but is also about building a better nation that transcends borders and opens infinite possibilities for everyone. We are excited about this development because of the immense benefits that the undersea cable system will bring to the Philippines.  For one, it will provide support for the expanding business requirement for data in the Mindanao region where the cable landing station is located and in the country as a whole.  This will also ease our dependence on international cable systems and ensure the resiliency of the country’s internet connectivity,” said Ernest L. Cu, Globe President and CEO.

The SEA-US cable system is connected to the Globe cable landing station in Brgy. Talomo, Davao City which also houses the Power Feed Equipment necessary to run the system. Outside of Luzon, the undersea cable is the first direct connection of Globe to the United States via Guam, Hawaii, and California, offering faster transmission of data to the US.

The facility also completely bypasses the Taiwan earthquake zone to ensure continuity of service and greater resiliency.  This is expected to prevent a repeat of a 2006 incident where major international cables were broken because of the Taiwan earthquake, resulting in the isolation of the Philippines for a few days in terms of internet connectivity.

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Rodolfo Salalima lauded the development and said that the launching of this SEA-US cable system underscores the importance of integrating ICT in the improvement of government service delivery. He added that the SEA-US project will help the government in realizing its ICT roadmap.

Peter Maquera, Senior Vice President for Globe Enterprise Group said that the facility will be most beneficial to businesses which require higher bandwidth and network resiliency at cost-efficient rates.
With the commercial operations,  customers can expect a more resilient network necessary for the continuity of their operations as well as greater route flexibility and better future support for bandwidth-dependent applications and services consistent with the growing trend of companies shifting their business critical operations to digital.

The 14,500-kilometer SEA-US international cable system, uses the latest 100 gigabits per second transmission technology to deliver an additional 20 terabits per second capacity.  Such additional capacity will cater to the exponential growth of bandwidth between the two continents.

The system was built by a consortium of 7 international telecommunications companies and links five areas and territories that include Manado (Indonesia), Davao (Philippines), Piti (Guam), Oahu (Hawaii, United States), and Los Angeles (California, United States).

Aside from forming part of the SEA-US consortium, Globe is also a member of an international consortium of telecommunications and technology companies operating the Southeast Asia-Japan Cable (SJC) system. SJC is an 8,900-kilometer cable system linking seven territories that include Brunei, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines, including the option to link with Thailand. The cable infrastructure is currently being upgraded to bring an increase of 6.5 Tb/s capacity with state of the art 100G technology.

Globe Telecom has also made investments in the East Asia Cable system (EAC), Asia Pacific Cable Network-2 (APCN2), Tata Global Network–Intra Asia cable system (TGN-IA), the City to City cable system (C2C), and is interconnected with major Trans-Pacific Cable systems that encompass the Unity, Tata Global Network-Pacific, (TGN-P) and the Japan-US Cable Network (J-US).

Premium Performance and Efficiency with the New Shell V-Power

Everyday driving is a challenge - from the increasing number of cars on the road to the ever-changing technology of engines, there are factors that can prevent our engines from performing at their best. When paired with the headache-inducing traffic situation in the Philippines, driving can really be a difficult experience. Now, more than ever, Filipino drivers look for a powerful fuel that can meet the demands of their everyday journeys while still being efficient.

Pilipinas Shell understands this need of Filipino drivers. To better equip them on the road, it continues to develop better fuel formulations. Working with the best teams available, such as its roster of 170 fuels scientists across their five fuels technology centers, Shell continues to churn out innovative products to help meet the constantly evolving needs of its customers and their vehicles.

After over five years of tireless work by R&D experts, Shell unveils brand new formulations for its premium Shell V-Power fuels. Shell V-Power is the only fuel co-engineered with and recommended by the iconic Formula 1 race team, Scuderia Ferrari. Shell’s most advanced Shell V-Power fuels are now formulated with its proprietary DYNAFLEX Technology.

Shell V-Power Racing and Shell V-Power Gasoline fuels target two key factors that can impact engine efficiency and performance – namely friction and deposits. The new Shell V-Power Diesel is designed to help restore up to 100% of your engine’s performance by removing deposits from fuel injectors.

Engine Efficiency and Performance
Just as professional athletes plan their diet, the fuel you put in your car can makes a difference. The new Shell V-Power’s DYNAFLEX Technology can help restore your engine’s performance by actively removing and preventing the build-up of fuel system deposits and reducing wasted energy, delivering Shell’s best-ever premium performance and efficiency.

Active Cleaning
Modern vehicle engines expose fuels to tougher conditions (e.g. higher pressures and temperatures) more than ever before. This creates potential for performance-robbing deposits to become stuck in key fuel system components such as fuel injector’s nozzle holes and inlet valves of gasoline engines. Since these deposits are not easily removed, they can prevent your engine from performing at its best. The new formulations of the Shell V-Power fuels are Shell’s most effective fuels at helping improve engine cleanliness by removing deposits that have already formed. The new Shell V-Power Racing and Shell V-Power Gasoline’s innovative formulation can remove up to 80% of performance-robbing deposits, with the twin effect of improving system condition and restoring lost performance.

Friction Reduction
The moment you fill up with Shell V-Power Racing or Shell V-Power Gasoline, a protective layer is instantly formed in critical parts of your engine which helps to reduce friction. This is important because friction is wasted energy that could otherwise be used in powering your car. These gasoline fuels are scientifically formulated with our breakthrough DYNAFLEX formulation, containing our new friction-reducing molecules helping engine parts that are difficult for lubricating oils to reach, including the vital area in the engine between the piston ring and the cylinder wall. This, in turn, allows the piston to slide up and down more easily, and improves the performance of the engine – whether you are cruising down the highway or in city traffic.

A reliable partner on the road
Shell is committed to making life’s journeys better for Filipinos, working tirelessly to improve its fuel and non-fuel offers. The new Shell V-Power is just one of the company’s ways to continue to be every Filipino’s reliable partner on the road for the next 100 years and beyond.

“We are constantly faced with the challenge to keep up with the rapid evolution of vehicle technology and the changing needs of our customers,” says Anthony Lawrence Yam, Pilipinas Shell Vice President for Retail. “This is why we have spent over half a decade of research and development to produce our best-ever fuel, the new Shell V-Power.”

By providing quality fuel products and services to motorists around the world, Shell gained its foothold as a global leader in power and energy. It pioneers next generation technology in developing new sources for a reliable energy mix, producing smarter products as well as promoting smarter use. Shell strives to build smarter infrastructure and provide energy efficient engineering solutions that promote

What’s keeping 36 year-old Tobi Ang says lately is learning to be a good father to his two young girls, Daniella (2.5y.o.) and Natalia (10 months) and "father" and leader of The Angcore Motor Group, where he sits as vice-president and COO.
“My day always starts waking up and spending time with my girls. The girls, Michelle, my wife, and our two girls are early risers, so I get to spend some quality family time with them before heading to the office,” shares Tobi.

We caught up with Tobi and his family in their lovely home. Over coffee, the young dad shared how he manages his time between being a dad, husband, and a businessman.

And since we can confidently say he is one of Davao’s well-dressed young men, we wanted to find out how his manner of dressing has changed from being single to becoming a dad.

The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer - Fast, focused and intelligent

Conventional hair dryers can be bulky and difficult to manoeuvre, can blast air at high temperatures, which can cause extreme heat damage, all with the risk of hair being sucked into and trapped in the filter. Yet despite these well known limitations hair dryer design has not advanced in more than 60 years.

Frustrated with the limitations, Dyson engineers set out to solve these problems. The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer uses a fast but focused airflow, is engineered for balance in the hand and intelligently controls the temperature to help protect hair from extreme heat damage.

James Dyson: “Hair dryers can be heavy, inefficient and make a racket. By looking at them further we realised that they can also cause extreme heat damage to hair. I challenged Dyson engineers to really understand the science of hair and develop technology which helps overcome the problems of hot, bulky and unintelligent hair dryers.”

Hair science

Dyson has invested £50 million in the development of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer including creating a state of the art laboratory dedicated to investigating the science of hair. Dyson engineers studied hair from root to tip, understanding how it reacts to stresses, how to keep it healthy and how to style it.

Over four years they tested the product on different hair types and built test rigs which mechanically simulate hair drying techniques – which can differ around the world. To date over 1010 miles of real human hair have been used in testing.

Motor enabled
The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer is powered by the patented Dyson digital motor V9, created in-house by a team of over 15 motor engineers specifically for this machine. It is Dyson’s smallest, lightest, most advanced digital motor.

It is up to eight times faster than other hair dryer motors and half the weight. In addition, because the Dyson digital motor is engineered to be powerful yet compact it is small enough to be positioned in the handle rather than the head; because of this the machine is engineered for balance. Most conventional hair dryers have the motor in the head of the machine.

Helps protect natural shine
Some conventional hair dryers can reach extreme temperatures, especially when held close to your head. This can cause extreme heat damage to your hair. The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer has intelligent heat control, helping to ensure hair isn’t exposed to excessive temperatures. A glass bead thermistor measures the temperature 20 times a second and transmits this data to the microprocessor, which intelligently controls the patented double-stacked heating element.

Fast & focused
The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer uses Dyson’s patented Air Multipliertechnology. The volume of the air drawn into the motor is amplified by three due to this technology, producing a high pressure, high velocity jet of air.

Traditional hair dryers can sometimes have a weak airflow, meaning they are slow. Others can have strong airflow, but it is not necessarily controlled. The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer creates a focused jet of air, angled at 20° for controlled, precise drying and styling. Allowing you to dry and style at the same time.

Acoustic engineering
A team of Dyson aero-acoustic engineers sought to understand how the acoustics of this machine could be optimised. By using an axial flow impeller inside the motor they have simplified the pathway of the air reducing turbulence and swirling. And by giving the motor impeller 13 blades instead of the usual 11, Dyson engineers pushed one tone within the motor to a sound frequency beyond the audible range for humans.

Also, because the motor is small and compact they have been able to embed it in the handle, surrounded by acoustic silencers to further reduce sound. The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer is a hair dryer engineered to reduce noise, without compromising on speed.

Settings and Attachments
The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer has four heat settings, three airflow settings and a cold shot too. Dyson engineers have created three precisely engineered magnetic attachments, with 16 patents pending, to further control this airflow allowing you to achieve a range of different styles.

-        The Dyson engineered smoothing nozzle dries hair gently, using smooth, wide air, allowing you to dry and style at the same time.

-        The Dyson diffuser is engineered to disperse air evenly around each curl. It simulates natural drying, helping to reduce frizz and improve definition.

-        And the attachments remain cool to the touch. Using Heat Shield technology the hot air is contained within a sandwich of cold air meaning the surfaces of the attachment stay cool.

-        Being magnetic, each nozzle is easy to attach and adjust.

-        There are multiple settings including constant cool to set your style; four heat settings, three airflow settings and a cold shot too.
