Beware of Text Scams!!

Be cautious of text scams
Be vigilant against text scams on supposed “discount,” “refund,” “prizes,” “stranded relatives” and other falsified claims disguised as share-a-load transactions. I believe that most of us have received at least one SMS message like those ones mentioned above and sadly, many have fallen prey to these "scammers". It pays to know and be alert so we can stop them from doing these fraudulent activities.

In the case of supposed “discounts” or “refunds”, Globe Telecom emphasized that legitimate advisories from the telecommunications provider are labelled from “GLOBE” and do not come from 11-digit numbers. Subscribers may validate unusual texts and calls with the company’s customer service agents.

Regarding spam messages that include text such as “send to 2915XXXXXXX,” by adding the number 2 before the 10-digit cell phone number of the recipient, the unsuspecting subscriber would have done a Share-A-Load transaction.

Another text scam informs customers that they supposedly won in a raffle contest they never participated in and the text message provides “steps” on how to claim the prize. Another text scam involves relatives working abroad supposedly using a new prepaid number, also aimed at tricking subscribers into doing a Share-A-Load transaction.

Globe customers are advised not to respond and, instead, immediately report suspicious text messages to authorized Globe customer service channels. Customers may report mobile numbers used in sending out fraudulent or scam text messages. Globe customers may report via the Globe website through Talk2Globe Chat (, send a message through Globe Contact Form ( and tweet @Talk2GLOBE on Twitter.

A Crack Down on Text Spams

How to stop spam for Iphone users
As an answer to mobile subscribers' woes regarding unwanted and unsolicited text messages/ads from random companies,  Globe Telecom as launched a campaign to crack down on these entities.

Globe asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to order Caritas Shield Inc. the payment of the appropriate fines and penalties for sending text spam to Globe subscribers. Globe also asked the NTC to permanently bar Caritas, its agents and employees from sending these spam texts to Globe customers. Other companies whose agents employ marketing strategies that involve sending text spams will be dealt with similarly.

Caritas has been sending spam text messages to Globe and TM subscribers, soliciting and enticing them to avail of its health care and insurance products. Text spams coming from Caritas have adversely affected the reputation of the company against its customers and caused “massive irritation” to Globe subscribers, resulting in numerous complaints with its customer service department.

How to stop spam for Android users
The crackdown versus companies involved in text spams follows an information drive launched by Globe in January this year aimed at educating subscribers on how to deal with irritating text spams. The information drive resulted in a total of 384 mobile numbers deactivated from Globe service in the first four months of the year, 11% higher than the total number of mobile numbers blocked from Globe for the whole of 2013.

Globe Introduces TxtHIV to 8504 campaign

Fernando Esguerra, Globe OIC for Corporate Social Responsibility, demonstrates how TxtHIV operates.  With him are (from L-R):  PNAC Executive Director Dr. Chito Avelino; S&S TechnologiesPhilippines President and CEO Mark Soriano; and PHANSUP Chairman Oscar Picazo.
In partnership with key partner organizations, Globe Telecom launches the “TxtHIV to 8504” campaign, an SMS-based information, counselling and clinic referral drive in Asia for people who wish to be tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and STI infection but are afraid of facing societal discrimination.

Globe postpaid and prepaid mobile users who are at risk may text HIV to 8504 and answer five yes or no questions via an interactive voice recording to check if testing is necessary. The sender will then be provided with contact details and addresses of the nearest specialized accredited health centers where they can go for assessment, counselling, and immediate treatment. All calls will remain very impersonal and confidential.

Given the increasing number of HIV cases in the Philippines, this innovative, cost-effective and practical initiative was launched based on the belief of making health accessible to all as well as the sharing of resources and expertise.
