Cyber crime Advocacy Program 'Angel Net'

Do you know that the increasing number of cybercrime cases in our country is brought by the rising number of internet users? To prevent these modern day criminals, PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group in partnership with Globe Telecom recently sponsored the Angel Net Summit at Camp Crame, Quezon City. It has theme “Safeguarding Our Children From Internet Dangers”. 

The forum was participated by selected companies in the country,  including Globe broadband Tattoo, sharing knowledge and approaches to be used for research and prevention of cybercrime especially among children.  

The event also included a symbolic signing on the covenant wall in support of cyber wellness.  It was led by NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba,  Anti-Cybercrime Group Director Police Senior Superintendent Gilbert Sosa and Tattoo Home Broadband Marketing Director Joseph Hans.

Out-of-school Youth Groomed for BPO employment, thanks to Globe Hotline

The country’s out-of-school youth can soon learn English easily and conveniently just by using their mobile phone as leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom introduces its new English Proficiency and Training Hotline during the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain where Globe is one of the exhibitors.

The move is in support of the mEducation initiative of GSM Association which brought together the Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and other industry players to create education opportunities for OSY nationwide.

The Globe Hotline is an Interactive Voice Recording (IVR) that could help out-of-school youth build their English language foundation without the need for formal schooling so that they can break into the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, a booming and constantly growing sector that contributes more than USD 10 Billion to the Philippine Gross Domestic Product.

It is now being pilot-tested at Bagosphere, a social enterprise based in Bago City, Negros Occidental funded by Kickstart Ventures, a startup incubator and investment firm of Globe.

Bagosphere trains OSY to get jobs in the BPO industry. Thus, once the Globe Hotline students pass the required English fundamentals, they can opt to join Bagosphere’s two-month BPO training program.  Bagosphere boasts of having 90% of its graduates employed in the first week of program completion.

“We are leveraging on our expertise in communications and information technology to bring skills and training to the underprivileged sector of society so that they can also have a chance to a brighter future.  The key task now is to monitor success of the Globe Hotline solution both in usage and effectiveness in improving the knowledge of our out-of-school youth.  Later phases of the project will include expansion of lessons and modules, and usage propagation in the rural areas,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.

At present, there are 4.2 million OSY in the Philippines who lack resources, basic skills, and opportunities to improve their standard of living.  In rural areas particularly, schools are too far away and with no internet connectivity, leaving children and young adults with little or no access to online education or independent learning.  As a result, OSYs find themselves staying below the poverty line and working in jobs offering less than the minimum wage.

Once the Globe Hotline becomes available commercially, Globe mobile service customers can gain convenient access to English training, acquire English fundamentals, and increase their employability.  They only need to be equipped with any kind of mobile phone as well as cellular service.

For first time callers, they will undergo a 10 question diagnostic pre-test to assess their skills.  After which, they will proceed to English training which has four lessons that make up the fundamentals for English proficiency such as parts of speech, parts of a sentence, listening and comprehension, and pronunciation.  Each lesson has a lecture, practice module, and a test, to check the student’s mastery of the lesson.

‘SUITS’ Star Gabriel Macht Scheduled To Visit Ormoc for PROJECT WONDERFUL

‘Suits’ lead star Gabriel Macht is scheduled to arrive in Ormoc City to raise awareness and financial aid for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan.
GABRIEL MACHT,  popularly known as the distinguished law practitioner HARVEY SPECTER in the provocative television drama SUITS, is set to visit the Philippines on March 8, specifically in the typhoon-struck Ormoc in the province of Leyte.

His visit is made possible by Globe Telecom, in fulfilling its commitment of building a wonderful and resilient Philippines through its Project Wonderful nation-building efforts by helping Typhoon Haiyan survivors in Ormoc City, Leyte.

In partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Globe has been granting business to beneficiaries identified by DSWD as part of its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), a community-based capacity-building program that seeks to improve the socio-economic status of program participants.

“We are committed to contribute to nation-building by providing relevant entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities among typhoon Yolanda survivors in Ormoc City so they can rise again and move forward,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu. “We hope that through this project, we will be able to teach them to manage sustainable micro-enterprises that will help them move from survival to self-efficiency,” he added.

GoSakto Wins Best Network-based Solution at the 19th Global Mobile Awards

Globe Chief Operating Advisor Peter Bithos receives the Best Network-Based Solution for Serving Customers award for Globe Prepaid Go Sakto: Create Your Own Promo at the 19th Annual Global Mobile Awards 2014 held at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Globe Telecom recently gained international recognition after winning in the Best Mobile Service category of the 19th Annual Global Mobile Awards by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade association for the world’s 800 mobile networks. .

Under the said category, Globe received the Best Network-based Solution for Serving Customers Award for Globe Prepaid GoSakto: Create Your Own Promo, beating entries from telco operators worldwide such as Avea for Location-Based Push Notification Service, LG Uplus for U+Box, SpatialBuzz and Telefonica UK for the Trusted Network Programme powered by SpatialBuzz, and TurkCell for TurkCell SMS+.

According to the participating judges, the submission was impressive because “it delivers the innovative pricing features to the prepaid market that have previously been confined to the postpaid market – giving many more customers the ability to personalize their services and tailor them to their needs.”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Says Philippines Is A Successful Test Bed for Initiative

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg keynotes this year’s Mobile World Congress with the theme “Creating What’s Next”. Zuckerberg is joined by renowned technology journalist David Kirkpatrick, author of "The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company that is Connecting the World".

In his speech, Zuckerberg’s shared his vision of a connected world through his pioneering project which was launched last year. Zuckerberg showcases Facebook’s partnership with Philippine mobile operator Globe Telecom, the first in the world to provide Free Facebook access to its millions of customers.

“ is a partnership, it’s an industry coalition working together to make the internet and the different parts of it more efficient. For everyone to have access to it for a really affordable price or free is the real goal for basic internet services. In the Philippines, for example, we’ve been working with Globe, and what we’ve seen in the Philippines is the number of people who are using internet and data has doubled. Aside from offering Facebook at zero data charges, the collaboration between the two global companies has also paved the way for Globe to put together innovation that covers key milestones in the customer experience journey such as availability of access on feature phones and smartphones across all Facebook mobile platforms whether via the Facebook app or the; proactive notification if the customer will incur data charges once a link that leads out of Facebook is clicked; and one-click registration to the data plan of choice to continue browsing without having to leave the site. Recommended data plans consider a subscriber’s available prepaid balance and/or megabytes (MB) balance of existing data plan.

Bithos added, “The engineering, business development and marketing teams at both Globe and Facebook have worked together to plan and design the customer experience from scratch. This service testifies how Globe is transforming itself beyond just an access carrier. Globe is striving to be a leading digital brand catering to the needs of digital Filipinos who need to be connected to their social circles around the world, sharing Mark and Facebook’s advocacy to bring the Internet closer to more individuals and empower them with an easy, reliable, and worry-free connection at the comfort of their mobile phone.”

Moreover, those customers who don’t have enough prepaid load can “loan” a 10MB data plan for only US$0.23 cents or P10.00 which will be deducted on their succeeding top-up so they can fully explore content outside Facebook, making the experience seamless and worry-free.

The Free Facebook service, which was initially offered for three (3) months paved the way for the Philippine telecom company to double its mobile data user base. Mobile browsing and other data revenues also increased to P11.6 billion as of end-2013, up 42% from P8.2 billion in 2012.

The offer also formed part of the company’s mobile data strategy to grow the number of users who access the Internet on their mobile phones, as well as provide a seamless customer experience with service innovations that address the fear of mobile internet. Now, more than 1% of Facebook users worldwide are using Free Facebook on Globe.

Citing strong demand and customer take-up for one of its biggest promos to date, Globe Telecom is extending its Free Facebook offer until April 30, 2014.
