What is an OPK?

OPK or ovulation predictor kit
For some couples, having a baby takes a lot of effort such as loads of fertility supplements and
countless visits to their Ob/Gynecologist. However, couples who want to get pregnant fast may want
make sure that the woman knows when her ovulation day is. Being able to know when the woman ovulates is the number key to getting pregnant fast. One of the most popular tools to use in checking for ovulation is using an OPK or an ovulation predictor kit.

A woman usually ovulates midway her cycle so if she has a by-the-book, 28-day cycle, she will usually ovulate around day 14. She can start using the ovulation test around day 7 to make sure doesn't miss the surge and continue testing until she gets a positive result.

An OPK is almost like a pregnancy test except that it detects when a woman ovulates. It has 2 kinds, one is the small strip and the other one is the large, midstream applicator. The only difference is how to use them but they have the same function. A woman has to take the test twice a day. When she showing 2 dark lines, it means she's ovulating and that is the best time to baby dance for the sperm to better catch the egg. Visit www.pregnancytips.org for more articles on getting pregnant.

Globe Begins Service Restoration Process for Typhoon Hagupit/Ruby Stricken Areas

The network operations team of Globe Telecom has started service restoration process in areas affected by Typhoon Ruby. As of 2 pm, December 7, the process mainly involves assessment of the typhoon’s impact on network infrastructure as weather remains unfavorable for field personnel to do actual field work.

The company’s operations team in Visayas is in full force to handle/manage network concerns as a result of Typhoon Ruby. However, the weather situation is a major factor as Globe prioritizes the safety of its employees at any given time. As long as the weather permits the team, the company is ready to execute service restoration.

Initial assessment tells us that there are no major outages caused by Typhoon Ruby, which made landfall in Eastern Samar Saturday night. Service disruptions were due mostly to power outages and misalignment of antennas following strong winds brought by the typhoon.

Full restoration may be completed within a 48-hour period after recovery efforts are initiated.

As of 12 pm of December 7, service interruptions have been monitored in some areas in the provinces of Biliran, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte and Western Samar.

PUBLIC ADVISORY: Typhoon Hagupit

Typhoon Hagupit is expected to make landfall in the Eastern Visayas (photocredits: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/ )
Typhoon Hagupit (also known as Typhoon Ruby) is said to be a super typhoon expected to hit the Philippines within 24 hours. With this, it is advised that those living in Eastern Visayas take necessary measures in preparation for it. The typhoon is expected to hit some of the areas devastated by Typhoon Yolanda about a year ago.

Globe Telecom urges its customers to charge their cellphones and other mobile devices, in case the weather anomaly causes extended commercial power failure. The company suggests customers may also opt to buy alternative source of energy such as power banks and rechargeable lamps with USBs.

Here are some tips to conserve battery life of smartphones:

1. Log off or turn off unnecessary mobile apps or at least disable push notifications for nonessential apps
2. Turn off unnecessary radios such as GPS, blue tooth and Wi-Fi.
3. Switch off vibrate function and utilize ring tone instead.
4. Turn off sync function.
5. Dim LCD screens and shorten screen timeout
6. Minimize notifications and use phone only when necessary

Customers in areas identified in the path of Typhoon Hagupit should also make sure their respective lists of contacts are in order. Contact lists should include emergency numbers such as the nearest hospital, police stations and barangay or community leaders.

Globe Senior Vice-President for Corporate Communications Yoly Crisanto said, “We are now strengthening our disaster-preparedness program in terms of added facilities, supplies, infrastructure, and manpower support so we can immediately attend to network and service concerns that may arise due to the typhoon,” she said.

Globe regional teams are being mobilized to ensure they are well equipped to address network issues that could arise from the typhoon.   Preparations include deployment of back-up supplies, power tools and infra materials, spares and back-up fuel.  Crisanto added that the company's disaster-preparedness program also include employee-safety measures to be implemented in areas that will likely be affected.

Crisanto said the company is coordinating closely with government authorities, specifically the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council or NDRRMC to ensure its disaster-preparedness program is aligned with both the national and local government efforts

Globe Has Now Blocked 2M Scam/Spam Messages and Counting

Sadly, spam and scam text messages remain to bother us till this day. In its end, Globe Telecom has so far blocked almost 2 million of these following the implementation of an automated filtering functionality that keeps its customers from receiving such annoying and unwanted messages.

Such filtering mechanism, which prevents the transmittal of spam and scam messages to mobile devices, now covers more than 70% of the company’s 2.1 million postpaid customers. The mobile company operationalized the automated filtering mechanism last August as part of the telecommunication provider’s efforts to rid its network of both spam and scam messages.

The volume of messages blocked by the network filtering system averages about 50,000/day, reaching a peak of more than 117,000 in early October when a large portion of the company’s postpaid customers were integrated into the filtering system.

The filtering system can be reconfigured to address the kind of spam and scam messages that goes through the network. While the filtering mechanism seems to be working well as a deterrent in the transmittal of spam and scam messages, Globe's technical team continues to design and develop mechanisms that will substantially rid the network of such irritating messages,

It is emphasized that mobile numbers that are identified to be a constant source of spam and scam messages will be temporarily disconnected from service. So far, more than 1,600 numbers have been cut off from service for this reason. This means that voice, SMS and data services will not be available to these numbers. Service restoration for such numbers will only be undertaken if the users contest the move and show proof they are not text spammers, he added.

Customers are enjoined to report such annoying messages by going to http://www.globe.com.ph/stopspam and provide all the details required. Numbers that are reported for the first time as the source of text spams are sent warnings. If the same numbers are reported for the second time due to text spams, these are immediately blocked from the network.

REVIEW: Kids Academy IOS Apps for Preschool and Kindergarten

Below are 3 IOS applications (for iPhone and Ipad) which you can find educational and fun for your toddlers. I downloaded them for my nephew Eurie who is here for a visit from Bicol.

If you have kids age 5 and below, feel free to have them and see for yourself! They are free to download, and you also have the option to buy the other related apps within them.

Here are my reviews (I just wish the creator of these will make the app titles shorter for easy recall, though):

I downloaded this application today for my 3 year old nephew Eurie and I was amused, he just can’t stop singing while holding my Iphone and learning too! Incidentally Bingo was a favorite song from Barney, it got him hooked while navigating, plus the colors and objects are very colorful and interactive!

Globe Telecom through its developer arm Globe Labs shows its support with the US Embassy to bring President Barack Obama’s Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) to the Filipino youth.

With this, the U.S. Embassy hosted a networking night at A Space in Makati, which brought young Filipino students, entrepreneurs, artists and professionals who are active in their own communities, thus encouraging them to join YSEALI and spread the word.

Samsung Brings New Generation of Digital Appliances To Your Homes

I am so glad to be able to attend the launch of Samsung's newest line of digital appliances. As a mom who does the everyday chores of a busy household, I find these smart gadgets very useful and yes, techie.

Samsung has taken a step higher in giving people a better lifestyle. Thus, equipped with state-of-the-art electronics and a passion for innovation, Samsung has come up with their new line of digital household appliances that will ensure a happy home.

Air Conditioner With Triangle Design

Among their breakthrough inventions is their new air conditioner with triangle design. In a country that is notorious for its sweltering summers, a proper air conditioner is almost mandatory. But the difference between this new Smart Air Conditioner and an conventional air conditioner is clear. It does not just produce cool air; it has been tailored to be more efficient and cost-effective in this task. Thanks to its carefully engineered triangle design which allows for bigger fans within a more compact body. Thus, it circulates cool air faster, farther, and wider while maintaining a sleek look.

The new Smart Air Conditioner is equipped with Samsung’s Digital Inverter Technology. It can maintain the desired temperature without frequently shutting off and on, so it consumes less energy. The Digital Inverter Technology helps users to stay comfortable for long periods of time, while using the minimum amount of energy – of up to 60% less electricity than conventional air conditioners
Designed to be outstandingly efficient, its uniquely triangular design has a wider inlet, wider outlet and a bigger fan to ensure that air is cooled and expelled faster (26%), farther (14m meters) and wider (39%) – ensuring even air distribution and powerful cooling.

Also, the new air conditioner begins cooling the air fast using its powerful Fast Cool mode, to cool down the room faster. It then automatically changes the mode to Comfort Cool to maintain the desired temperature. Users won’t feel cold and don’t have to keep manually changing the settings or turning the air conditioner on and off.

Energy efficiency is a key purchasing decision for consumers. The Samsung Air Conditioner’s Single User mode gives the flexibility to the user to control the capacity by effective use of energy. It uses less compressor capacity, reducing power consumption, while still providing a cool and comfortable environment. This ensures that users won’t have to worry about the electricity bill even if there’s only one person in the room.

The new Samsung Air Conditioner features Samsung’s exclusive Virus Doctor that keeps families safe and comfortable through innovative air purifying technology, which neutralizes harmful contaminants in the air. The Virus Doctor feature has received various accolades including a 2010 AHR Expo Innovation Award in the indoor air-quality category, a 1st Air Day Minister of the Environmental Award, and the Jang Young Sil Award. Now, mothers need not worry about air-born viruses and allergens with Samsung’s Virus Doctor technology.

Using an application on a smartphone, the Smart Wi-Fi function lets users remotely control the functions of the Samsung Air Conditioner to schedule its operation. In any location with a wireless network, users can instantly turn it on and off and select the operating mode as well as temperature. Additionally, the air conditioner is able to communicate operational time and electricity usage as well as providing filter cleaning reminders. The unit can also store preferred operational settings and cooling preferences.

The Smart Installation is a self-diagnosis feature that ensures the air conditioner is installed perfectly by the aircon installer. It automatically checks for installation faults that might cause problems when the air conditioner starts operating.

The Smart Check automatic error-monitoring system detects and diagnoses problems and provides easy troubleshooting solutions using a smartphone application. It saves users time and prevents unnecessary costs prior to a service call.

This, alongside its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and innovative design, makes Samsung’s new Smart Air Conditioner the perfect household appliance for any savvy family wishing to ensure the health and wellness of their children.

Food ShowCase Refrigerator

Part of their new lineup also includes the new Food Showcase Refrigerator. This innovation provides smart organization for all your different types of food. There are two layers of doors in order to properly showcase the contents of the refrigerator, making it much easier to visualize your stocks. There are the outer compartments for your most frequently used products, allowing instant access. And then there are the inner compartments for ingredients that you don’t use as often. Not only does this maximize space, this setup makes organizing and consuming food a simple process. Everyone in the family, including the children can access refrigerator contents with ease.

The new Food ShowCase Refrigerator also features an ice and water dispenser. At the touch of a button, users can enjoy a refreshing glass of chilled filtered water or fill a pitcher with cubed or crushed ice.

This refrigerator is also equipped with Samsung’s trademark Digital Inverter Technology. This means that the refrigerator utilizes the same smart technology that allows it to adjust its temperature accordingly. Thus, no unnecessary energy is consumed, making this an efficient and cost-effective appliance.

Front Load Washing Machine with Eco-Bubble Technology

Another addition to their lineup of smart appliances is the Front Load Washing Machine. Doing the laundry is an arduous and time-consuming task. There are many things to consider when it comes to washing fabric, but Samsung’s newest Front Load Washing Machine makes cleaning clothes a breeze. It makes use of Samsung’s own Eco Bubble Technology that allows powerful cleaning in cold water. Using warm water is an extra step when it comes to doing the laundry, and it can also be damaging to some fabrics. But the Eco Bubble allows for easy cleaning by completely dissolving detergent even with cold water producing fine foam that easily penetrates the fabric for both effective and gentle, cutting the time, effort, and energy needed in doing this task.

In addition to being extremely powerful with its high Revolution Per Minute (RPM) rate, it is also furnished with the Stain Away Program. This pre-programmed cycle was designed to deal with the 12 most common types of stains: blood, cocoa, sebum, oatmeal, tea, wine, tomato, pencil lead, mud, makeup, lipstick, and grass. It does all this with less noise, less vibration, and more performance than an ordinary washing machine. And of course, it is outfitted with the Digital Inverter Technology, guaranteeing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Samsung Smart Oven

Last on Samsung’s latest digital appliance lineup is the Samsung Smart Oven. The Samsung Smart Oven comes with more cooking settings in order to provide families with the best cooking experience possible. It includes features such as auto-cook for pre-programmed recipes yogurt making, dough proofing, and “Slim Fry” function. Slimfry function is what differentiates this from the typical Microwave Oven, since preparing meals no longer has to be an unhealthy experience.

The “Slim Fry” technology allows you to enjoy your favourite fried food cooked to a crisp without the oil. Cooking healthier meals for the family without cutting on taste and texture is now made possible. Meanwhile, the other smart features this smart oven has fulfilled a multitude of purposes. Its premium sensors allows it identify a food’s surface temperature, so whether it is frozen, chilled, or fresh, it can adjust its heat accordingly so you do not have to worry about overcooking or undercooking your meals. This makes it a great addition to any household.

Globe Telecom's Network is Now 100% 4G Connected

Globe now has 100% 4G coverage!!!
Great news for all its subscribers, Globe Telecom has now already completed the rollout of the HSPA+ technology, equipping its network with 100% 4G coverage. This will provide its customers with faster and more reliable wireless internet connectivity.

The Globe 4G HSPA+ network extends the company’s ability, as a telecommunications provider, to adequately serve high data usage of customers amid proliferation of bandwidth-intensive applications and growing preference for smartphones and other mobile devices,” Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu said.

It is said that the Globe 4G HSPA+ network  greatly enhances customers’ digital lifestyle as technological innovations constantly change the way people live and communicate. This is because  more and more people are more drawn into living the digital lifestyle and what they download, explore, and share online define their identity and lifestyle as digital citizens.

In June, Globe Telecom became the first mobile operator in the country to fully equip its network with the 3G technology. The rollout of both 3G and 4G HSPA+ infrastructure for the entire Globe network forms part of the company’s transformation efforts. Still, Globe Telecom will continue to upgrade its facilities in line with its thrust of future-proofing its network as technologies continue to evolve at a much faster rate.

Recently, Globe signed a landmark partnership with Alcatel Lucent to expand its LTE-TDD and LTE-FDD footprint in Visayas and Mindanao as part of an initiative to further extend the telecommunication provider’s mobile ultra-broadband infrastructure in the country. Last week, the company activated its first LTE-TDD site under the expansion program in Lahug, Cebu. The rollout is part of the mobile operator’s continuing adoption of more advanced technologies for better connectivity experience, higher network capacity and faster transmission speeds.

Let's Celebrate National Teachers’ Month with #GlobeWonderfulTeacher campaign

It is October once again, and the academic community gives the limelight to our very dear teachers with the celebration of the National Teachers’ Month.Globe joins the rest of the academe in honoring the noble contributions of teachers to nation-building and development.

In partnership with Teach for the Philippines, a for-purpose, non-stock, non-profit organization that works to provide Filipino children with an inclusive, relevant, and excellent education,  Globe, in its part uses the digital brand for the youth Globe Prepaid, engaging one of its key leaders to be a guest teacher in the organization’s partner school in Mandaluyong City.

Globe Vice President and Head of Prepaid Business Issa Cabreira takes the role of a teacher by teaching English to the Grade 3 students of Highway Hills Integrated School and shareing with the students her work experiences, emphasizing the importance of education and to inspire the students to strive for success.

Globe also launched a social media campaign, #GlobeWonderfulTeacher to acknowledge our teachers’ wonderful work in shaping the future of the nation.

With the #WonderfulGlobeTeacher program, twenty-one (21) teachers will be selected as recipients of the “Globe Wonderful Teachers Awards”, a tribute to mentors who have shown great dedication to their craft.

All students can participate in the campaign by posting selfies on their Facebook and Twitter accounts with the hashtag #GlobeWonderfulTeacher.  Each entry should include a short description on why they consider their nominated teachers wonderful. Prepaid load credits will be awarded to the student and teacher chosen for the winning daily entry.

The National Teachers’ Month is celebrated from September 5 to October 5 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 242 which recognizes the need to “celebrate the unique role and service that teachers play in guiding families, strengthening communities, and building the nation.” This year, it is anchored on the theme, "My Teacher, My Hero" to acknowledge the teachers.

Aklan: Where Old Phones Are Turned Into Classrooms

Most of the time, old non-working phones are often disposed of or thrown to the trash, but not for Globe Telecom. Although these phones have outgrown their usefulness, they can still do something wonderful, and that is to build classrooms for the children of Aklan.

Today, Aklan needs hundreds of classrooms to accommodate its student population which was displaced after schools were destroyed or damaged by Typhoon Haiyan almost a year ago.   Globe, a development partner for Aklan, committed to put up at least 40 school buildings in the province.

Project 1 Phone is a big and important campaign created by Globe to hit two birds at the same time. Its first goal is to educate Filipinos about the importance of proper disposal of electronic waste or e-waste and secondly, to contribute to the special cause of classroom building by donating recycling proceeds to the Aklan initiative.

Instead of throwing our old phones, let's do something wonderful by donating them to Project 1 Phone. This way, we can help  in providing our schoolchildren a decent place to study.  This generous act will also be environment friendly as there would be less toxins being emitted by the wrong use of e-waste disposal

Globe is set to build schools in two phases with the help of Habitat for Humanity and Ayala Foundation.  The first phase involves the construction of five “Noah’s Ark”-type classrooms that double as evacuation structures during calamities as they are equipped with three toilet and bath facilities and a kitchen.  One such structure will be built in each of the seven identified municipalities in Aklan, namely:  Libacao, Madalag, Banga, Batan, Altavas, Balete, New Washington. The second phase will be comprised of more than 30 regular but “built back better” classrooms.

Donation bins for non-working phones and tablets, mobile phone batteries, and chargers are available at all participating Globe Stores in various parts of the country (for the complete list, please visit the Globe Telecom website www.globe.com.ph/project1phone ).

All devices and accessories that Globe will gather shall be turned over to TES-AMM, a leading electronics waste recycler which will take responsibility for at end-of-life products to ensure that they are managed responsibly. TES-AMM will, likewise, work on recovering precious metals and plastics from the recycled gadgets, proceeds of which will go to classroom construction.

E-waste is not limited to mobile gadgets but includes all obsolete and unwanted electronic and electrical devices which are usually dumped in the trash and crushed by garbage incinerators, thereby, causing harmful metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and beryllium to pollute the air, land, and water.

PH+SocialGood: Manila #2030NOW, is a two-day Manila leg of the New York-based initiative to be held at The Mind Museum, will particularly focus on how technology can be used to deal with climate change and the impact it leaves behind; how businesses can transform and empower women; how efforts to collapse the digital divide are helping bring the Internet to everyone; and finally, how people can help ensure that there will be no casualties when the next typhoon comes.

Globe has been very active in helping communities affected by disasters not only through quick assistance such as Libreng Tawag and charging activities and relief operations but more importantly, by providing them the means to get back on their feet and live normally again.

LTE CA, LTE eMBMS Technologies in Celebration of Globe Innovation Month

Globe showcases their LTE-CA technology with speeds of up to 220 Mbps and the new LTE Broadcast (eMBMS)

The LTE technologies that will enable the telecommunications provider to stay ahead of its customers’ data requirement amid increasing use of bandwidth-intensive applications, are presented by Globe Telecom during the celebration of Innovation Month in line with its advocacy to promote and develop innovative products and services.

During the Globe Innovation Forum (GIF), Globe demonstrated its on-going Proof-of-Concept Trials on  LTE- CA (Carrier Aggregation) and LTE eMBMS (enhanced Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service) or LTE Broadcast.

The LTE CA technology dramatically increases efficient utilization of frequencies, enabling mobile operators to use non-contiguous blocks of spectrum in multiple frequency bands to achieve higher bandwidths to meet growing demand for wireless broadband services.

LTE CA has an average throughput of around 220 Mbps with a total 20 MHz of spectrum and initial tests conducted by Globe in April this year showed a maximum speed of up to 230 Mbps, Estrada said.

On the other hand, LTE eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) technology paves the way for the efficient delivery of video and multimedia services over a telco’s LTE network.

Growing popularity of smartphones and other mobile devices has led to customer preference for mobile multimedia and video service. However, multimedia applications require large bandwidths and generate large amount of data traffic, quickly exhausting bandwidth resources of mobile operators.

For mobile live TV watching on smartphones and tablets, LTE eMBMS works by simply downloading its Live TV Apps and also by using an eMBMS capable device or smartphone.  LTE eMBMS will be commercially available within 2015 in select areas, he added.

In addition to demonstrating LTE CA and eMBMS and as part of its activities for celebration of Innovation Month, Globe held Mind Brew talks, a relaxed, sit-down café forum, where experts of different fields were invited to inspire employees to share their thoughts and ideas and make them realize that there is always a better, more effective, and creative way of doing things.  Globe developer community Globe Labs also helped employees unleash innovation and break boundaries through iSpark, which encouraged employees to form groups, prepare their hack concept, make it happen, and pitch their app.

The telco provider also launched Globe City, a virtual platform where everyone has the opportunity not just to share their ideas but to turn them into reality and earn from it, all in a fun gaming environment.  Also showcasing their latest products and services during the Globe Innovation Forum were Globe technology partners such as Nokia, WSA/Telco Systems, Gemalto, SMSGT, DTQ, Stratpoint, Acision, Teradata, Amdocs, SmartQ, Evolving Systems, Huawei, WSA/TeleDNA, Nominum, and SAS.

Globe Telecom  has recently partnered with Gawad Kalinga, a movement which fights poverty to givee sustainable livelihood opportunities to residents of GK Villages in various parts of the country to make this underserved sector a significant partner in nation building.

Teodoro Suaza of GAWA leading the Home Maintenance Team
“Globe continues to do its share in building a resilient Philippines with programs that move toward initiating sustainable efforts like providing livelihood opportunities.  Together with our long-time partner Gawad Kalinga and their social enterprises, we are doing our best to create a wonderful world of possibilities by helping them discover and nurture their potentials,” said Martha Sazon, Sr. Vice President, Globe MyBusiness. Globe myBusiness provides small and medium businesses with innovative, customizable products, services and solutions such as internet connectivity for social enterprises at the GK Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan.

Globe MyBusiness helped leapfrog the implementation of the Gawad Kalinga Workers Association (GAWA), an organization which combines values formation and skills development to ensure that the informal sector will be given a chance to earn a living either on their own or by serving the community.  GAWA is also a response to the huge demand for build activities and other services within and outside GK communities. Since its conception in July 2013, GAWA was able to conduct 42 forums that produced 2,268 graduates, with more to follow.
